This film is one of the two best Samurai films of all time, the other being Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI. CHUSHINGURA (“loyalty”) is based on a trusty incident in 18th century Japan, wherein 47 sincere retainers of a disgraced lord engage a mumble of vengeance on the gross nobleman who caused his downfall and death. The narrative is timeless, the acting is uniformly sparkling, the camera work is so aesthetic that any frame of this film could be hung in an art gallery, and the music is tantalizing and heart-lifting. It’s a complex station, following many separate individuals as their vengeance unfolds, so first-time viewers may catch confused. No matter — it all comes together at the extinguish. Gawk for the leisurely big Toshiro Mifune in a cameo role as a Master Spearman who becomes drinking buddies with one of the 47, and who takes it upon himself to have off the cops in the final showdown so that his pal and the other 46 won’t be interrupted before they can rep and behead the poor guy and fulfill their impart. I have watched this movie many, many times, and I always accumulate something current and fantastic in it. Now that it’s FINALLY available on video, don’t miss it!!

Despite the film’s division into two parts, I reflect the Chushingura is best understood as a complicated record told in three acts.

The first act, culminating in the seppuku of Lord Asano, details the conflict between the young lord and Kira, the Shogun’s master of ceremonies, and is, in my conception, the most enchanting as it unfolds logically, tragically, and inevitably towards the spilling of blood in the Shogun’s castle. Asano and Kira, at least in this stage of the film, are fully realized and three-dimensional characters, and their conflict can be understood on several levels: idealism versus pragmatism; rural versus urban; and, most centrally, a conflict between different conceptions of honor. Kira is slighted because Asano won’t display him the deference he feels he deserves, and Asano cannot collect Kira’s attempt to lisp him a lesson without fatally wounding his pride. The characters feel right because the site is developed so carefully, and we as viewers understand why the notable actors behave as they do.

I deem the movie bogs down a bit in the second act where the retainers of Asana station their revenge on Kira. I also feel it is at this point that those exclusive with this yarn may gain it difficult to follow the set. Like the assassination of Thomas Becket in 12th century England, the narrative of the 47 trusty retainers has left the historian with not only a wealth of famous documents but also of contemporary analysis of exactly how the events were interpreted. Whereas Becket’s slay resonated because of the changing perceptions of the limits of temporal power in medieval Europe, the 47 ronin deem the changing nature of samurai honor following the pacification of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate. Unfortunately, the movie does miniature to interpret the issues keen despite a three and half hour presentation. The historical Oishi, for instance, worked patiently tedious the scenes for years to restore the clan’s honor and holdings under the leadership of Asano’s younger brother whereas Horibe represented the more radical notion that the ronin owed personal allegiance only to their plain lord. In the movie, by difference, Oishi makes reference to restoring the clan and questions Asano’s judgment at the castle, but it is absolutely unclear in the context of the film whether this represents his lawful beliefs or is simply share of the feint to divert attention from the location to slay Kira. It is, in fact, hard to ever discern exactly what Oishi is planning, even in hindsight. Horibe, as the leader of the other waft of the retainers, fairs worse, emerging only as Toshiro Mifune’s drinking buddy (Mifune, though always delicious to leer, is largely wasted in a sub-plot that is completely superfluous to the record) . I don’t request complete historical fidelity, but I do ask the events to accomplish coherently and to address the main issues of the memoir. I’m not saying that it is a complete mess, fair that it is hard to follow at times, and it is not always distinct what motivates the characters, and, as film usually does, some of the subtleties of the dependable events are lost.

Thankfully, the animated and illustrious battle in the snow largely redeems any momentary flagging of interest. My only quibble is that Kira has degenerated by this point into an absolute caricature of his previous self, becoming the embodiment of the man without honor. I suspect this is incorporated less from history and more from the popularizations of this anecdote, e.g., the various kabuki stagings.

Others have spoken of the ravishing visuals, so I won’t belabor the point. Suffice it to say this alone is a first-rate reason to gape this film. Others have also spoken of the tiresome lumber. This is also proper, and if you quiz a tight focus in your movies, this one probably isn’t for you.

This work, narrated by Gene Kelley, is devoted to the cinema musicals, starting with seldom seen footage of the quiet era, and continuing with the improbable dancing scenes of Busby Berkley. Next we travel on to the Fred Astaire period, which centers attention on the individual dancer. We stare blooming performances from the likes of Ginger Rogers, Ruby Keeler as well as the incomparable Nicholas Brothers. With the advent of color, comes a never previously seen number on the ‘yellow brick road’ with Judy Garland and Ray Bolger. Not to forget a marvellous routine by Shirley Temple and Bojangles Robinson! Alltogether, this is the most memorable series of dance sequences that I have ever seen in half a century.

This film is a must-see for any dancer. The clips feeble to showcase different types of dancing in film are creatively woven together and the commentary is very informative. Many distinguished scenes from the veteran MGM musicals to the water spray scene in Flashdance are worn to illustrate how diversified dancing in films can be. For ballet dancers, there is a fragment devoted solely to ballet in films which is hosted by Mikhail Baryshnikov. Scenes of Rudolph Nureyev leaping through the air compliment this fraction as well as scenes from various ballets. Liza Minelli hosts the Broadway inspirational share which is shorter in length. I only saw this film once but I feel that it is a must-own selection for any dancer.

102- THE ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY (with short: COMMANDO CODY AND THE RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON Pt. 1)

La Momia azteca contra el robot humano was made in Mexico and was released in the US in 1959. From the grade Z costumes, acting and special effects to the mediocre dubbing, this film is perfect fodder for MST3K. If you’ve always wanted to recognize a poorly costumed mummy battle a cardboard box style robot, this is your film. This episode also features the beginning of Radar Men From The Moon, which was one of the best things about Season One MST3K. Hilarious!

509- THE GIRL IN LOVER’S LANE

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XV! Click Here

This 1959 black-and-white film features Joyce Meadows and a very young Jack Elam. The film is a hackneyed account about alarmed teens from broken and pickle homes, but the acting is not actually that awful and it’s spicy enough to really irk you when you win to the incredibly depressing outcome of this film. Even the final sketch of the indicate focuses on the horrible ending of the film. Composed, if you focus on the jokes from the MST3K crew then you can accept through it and the mostly one-dimensional and tiresome writing compose for some comical jokes through most of the film.

604- ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE

This terribly cheap and amateurish “dread” movie from 1986 stars Adam West. The scariest thing in this movie is the scene where the kid in his white underwear leaves a hot tub. Hilariously terrible teen anxiety that works extremely well for MST3K. Zombie Nightmare is the only color film in this DVD site. This is a strong episode from the post-Joel era of the expose.

616- RACKET GIRLS (with short: ARE YOU READY FOR MARRIAGE? )

This 1951 film is about a guy who runs a women’s wrestling league as a front for all manner of illegal rackets. The film has a very “Ed Wood” quality to it. The movie and especially the short, Are You Ready For Marriage?, both work extremely well for the note.

Extras features include:

* Glimpses of KTMA (when the prove was on a local channel in Minneapolis before it appeared on The Comedy Channel)

* The Accomplish And Speculative Technology Of MST3K: Joel Hodgson And Designate Beaulieu Visit M.I.T.

* Novel Interviews with “Zombie Nightmare” stars Frank Dietz, Jon Mikl Thor and John Fasano.

Shout Factory has brought us another plot of MST3K episodes for their next station Volume 15. This plot is as follows :

EPISODE 102 – THE ROBOT VS THE AZTEC MUMMY – this is the earliest episode to date (only 101 and KTMA episodes would be earlier) . This is a K Gordon Murray outrageous budget movie (he also gave us Santa Claus and other south of the border gems) Joel and the bots ( Tom Servo is Josh Weinstein – the only plan to spy him as Servo or Dr Erhardt is from Season 1) riffle through this OK, but not as friendly as later episodes when they mastered the technique. It is tranquil fun to eye and intelligent in a historical sense since it is an early episode. Joel & the bots large segments are with the Demon Dogs! This has the short Commando Cody – Radar Men from the Moon Allotment 1 as well..

EPISODE 509 – THE GIRL IN LOVERS LANE – This is a fun, campy cult B movie with Brett Halsey (Return of the Glide) as a drifter with a young inexperienced drifter named Danny who resolve into a town & halt drifting. Brett is Bix Duggan called Sizable Monotonous by Joel and the bots. Bix falls in adore but he wants to drift again. Bix also teaches Danny how to survive in the urban jungle & morals as well. Bix gets lynched too in this. Jack Elam plays a greasy awful guy in this. Jack was a grand character actor & Crow does a segment to present us that he is. A very honorable episode and glad it is finally coming out. This is also on Alpha DVD where you can peer the scenes that were nick including Joyce Meadows death scene where Jack goes after her at the demolish…

EPISODE 604 – ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE – Quite possibly one of the best and most well-liked Mike episodes (this is subject to debate but a lot of MST3K fans did rejoice on this coming out) John Mikl Thor is the zombie (until the ending) killing kids who ran him over. This has the one and only Adam West – TVs Batman. Why he got enthusiastic in this is anyone’s guess…but you know it is not that abominable. No it is not vast, but it is a credible movie on its believe.A spacious rock soundtrack (Motorhead’s Ace of Spades is the songs intro) . A few gore scenes were slice, but for those that want it uncut, toward the later piece of 2009, this movie will reach out on DVD from Code Red – uncut with a high def transfer.

Great episode, a personal celebrated Mike episode.

EPISODE 616 – RACKET GIRLS – This is the one that contains female pro-wrestlers such as peaches. A harmless obscure fun B movie Gangster/Female wrestling movie – that really cant cause Mike and the Bots any injure. If you like WWE this ones for you. This has the short “Are you ready for marriage”. I believe it is a solid episode, not a accepted one but I like the broken-down gloomy & white ones.In a diagram it reminded me of a heinous between Violent Years, Unfriendly Accelerate and any gangster movie

This state contains the following bonus features.

Glimpses of KTMA (This was the channel MST aired on – a local Minneapolis channel before Best Brains became allotment of Comedy Channel)

The Construct And Speculative Technology Of MST3K: Joel Hodgson And Ticket Beaulieu Visit M.I.T.(Trace – THIS FEATURE HAS SINCE BEEN AXED FOR TECHNICAL PROBLEMS)

New Interviews with “Zombie Nightmare” stars Frank Dietz, Jon Mikl Thor and John Fasano. I met Thor a few years ago and looked like Billy Idol on HGH. He is not great, but shapely buffed and is a ample guy – it was a honor to meet him. He played with his Thorchestra in a nightclub in my hometown

Kevin Murphy And Stamp Beaulieu in a Sneak Spy of the upcoming independent feature film Hamlet A.D.D.

Trailers/promos

4 diminutive edition mini-posters (like you’ve seen in previous sets)

Overall another vast station with some nice bonus features. If you have all the other MST sets, don’t pass this up either. A chance to have more sterling episodes on DVD quality. Not every dwelling will please everyone but overall this has some diversity with 2 Joels and 2 Mikes, and we bag 2 Tom Servos as well. No Sci Fi in this space, which hasn’t happened in a long time. A lot of fans came during the scifi era that did not fetch all the Comedy Central episodes, this is a pleasant opportunity for some fans to eye something that they haven’t seen before. Overall, personally I feel this location has solid episodes, a historical 1st season episode. I contemplate it is well rounded & I would call this a righteous batch of episodes. It wont please everybody(no station does), but it should please those of us who cherish the present & relish impartial having more titles on DVD with first-rate image quality. Even if there are some episodes we like better than other, the fact is any MST3K episode released to DVD is a qualified release. Thank you Weep Factory, maintain up the enormous work.

Kipper has been a gargantuan savor at our house since my 3 year conventional son was 18 months. The “Kipper- Imagine That” video does have one exclusive and rather freaky sage in it- it starts with the characters finding a secret door that leads them off into darkness. Eventually, they extinguish up a desert-like land where a scary dragon pops out of a crater at them! It terrified the daylights out of my son, who insists on fastforwarding through that entire episode. The other stories are your typical gentle Kipper and friends.

My 22 month faded son and I Esteem Kipper. The shorts included in this video showcase Kipper and his friends in all sorts of situations where they rely on their imaginations to have fun. It’s also longer than most kids’ videos–a paunchy hour–and if you can wade through the seemingly endless promos for other videos at the beginning of the tape, you’ll tumble in adore with Kipper, impartial like we did.

I’d seen the October Sky DVD at the local video store, but avoided it–I imagine because I didn’t know mighty about it and because I’d read it was impartial a “family” movie and figured it wouldn’t be very enchanting. Well, I finally rented it, and now I observe why so many of the reviewers here have raved about it. I won’t go into the story–others here have. I’ll impartial say that October Sky is simply a fabulous chronicle, and it’s very well told in this movie–script, direction, and cast are all first rate, the photography is pretty, and the find evocative. It even captured our thirteen year faded son’s attention–not a slight feat for a movie with a PG rating. My guess is you’ll be thinking about Coalwood, West Virgina, and its people for a while after seeing this movie. (I should add I ended up buying both the DVD and Rocket Boys (also published as October Sky), the book on which the movie is based. The book is broad, too.)

Not everybody will like this film. Three people out of the one hundred and seventy five reviewers here didn’t like it. And fifteen more out of the remaining one hundred and seventy two gave it three or four stars, leaving one hundred and fifty seven who notion this an absolutely immense movie against eighteen who didn’t.

So I judge I’m worthy enough to say you’ll like this movie even if reading about it doesn’t produce it sound that entertaining. The bottom line is that this movie is so very human. The boys who are obsessed with rockets are normal, every day boys sparked with enthusiasm about what can be done. They are following their have stars, their bear sense of what is true for them, against the opposition of those who don’t understand.

And so, there is a tale for each and every one here, a very staunch memoir about following your maintain star, not somebody else’s. Yes, it’s a feel obedient movie, but it achieves this through the power of the fair tale, not out of viewer manipulation.

As a fan of Asian cinema, I’ve often wondered why I haven’t reviewed more Japanese anime. Venerable anime has very complex storylines that can place most movies to shame. “VEXILLE” (a.k.a. Vexille 2077 Nihon Sakaku, Isolation) is from the same folks responsible for Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.. Director Fumihiko Sori and writer Haruka Handa’s latest is a blend of mature 2 dimensional animation and 3-D effects that gives us a vision of a futuristic world. People who saw Appleseed may view the similarities to Masamune Shirow’s futuristic designs since they both worked on the 2004 hit spicy film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Vexille! Click Here

The anecdote in “Vexille” begins as Daiwa Industries leads Japan in technological advancements as an attempt for Imperial Aspirations (recalls Japan in WWII) . Daiwa began experimenting in grievous cloning, bio-engineering human tissue to combine with machine parts. Aroused with these experiments, the U.N. orders Japan to stop all activities. In retaliation, Japan sanctions a rule of total isolation from the rest of the world, and the country even goes as far as generating a magnetic force field around its borders.

After 10 years, American intelligence intercepts information that Japan has developed a way that can turn humans into cyborgs. A gloomy ops group called “S.W.O.R.D.” is sent to infiltrate isolated Japan to accumulate the truth of this matter and finish it if distinguished. Vexille, one of the commando units sent to Japan soon finds herself the lone survivor who may be able to conclude Daiwa with its gross plans. She hooks up with Maria and her gang of renegades to infiltrate Daiwa. But is Maria more than what she seems? The monstrous secret may be more than they bargained for….

I’ve read that “Vexille” wasn’t such a sizable hit when it came out in Japan. Perhaps, anime fans experienced some “cyberpunk” overload because there are quite a lot of features that expose a futuristic world with “mechas” involved; or maybe because the place in “Vexille” portrays the country as a “rogue” government in the world’s eyes. I wouldn’t know the right reason. But this modern work by Sori and Handa seemed too similar to Shirow’s past works. It incorporates familiar themes of the usual corporate entity that wants to play God, a strong-willed, gutsy but fair heroine, futuristic military weaponry and the premise of man vs. machine or the morality of man and machine. The film may actually be homage to Masamune Shirow.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Vexille! Click Here

The animation in “Vexille” is kind of a mixed bag. I loved the fact that the characters don’t have the usual over-expressive “bulging” eyes, irregular colored hair and perfect complexion. Vexille and Maria (as well the entire supporting cast) looked almost realistic in their features, it sidestepped the usual anime conventions that we’re outmoded to in the past. Their movements are also very fluid and serene that outshines the motion recall in “Beowulf” but comes a lot short of the quality of the incredible animation in “Final Fantasy: Advent Children”. I also found it a bit humorous that Americans looked like they’re mixed and tranquil looked a tad Asian. (Not complaining, impartial stating an observation) Also, I saw this film in its new Japanese language; affirm actors Yasuko Matsuyuri as sexy rebel, Maria (This character makes me want to become a cartoon) and Meisa Kuroki as Vexille do a very decent job in expressing emotions.

The film totally looks piquant with the execution of CGI and dilapidated cell animation. The effects work by Oxybot is perfect for this type of movie. “Vexille” seems to borrow elements from Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and even Dune. (You’ll be impressed once you gaze the “Jags”) The one fault that the film has, that somewhat lost its effectiveness is the lack of dramatic impact. The chronicle is deep enough to withhold experienced viewers alive to but the execution seemed a bit lackluster. It opted to decide for the usual histrionics and missed a unbelievable opportunity for emotional pronounce by exploring the dramatic repercussions of the film’s main premise. Graphics can only carry an exciting feature so far.

Overall, I did relish “Vexille” more than I did “Appleseed Ex Machina”. I guess I’m so old to Anime with all the dramatic elements explored that I was somewhat disappointed. The film had all the dynamic potential with its deep premise that wasn’t fully realized.

Recommended! For Japanese Anime or Sci-Fi films FANS! [3 ½ Stars]

After reading a short synopsis and the Japanese version trailer of this movie (when looking for something to go ogle one evening), I figured I’d check it out. I’m not a tremendous fan of a lot of Japanese anime, though some of it is icy, and I’m not normally a gigantic fan of spellbinding drama/action in general, but WOW was Vexille a capable surprise! If I had to compare it to something, I would say it’s Final Fantasy meets Titan A.E. and maybe a dinky bit of the Matrix.

The animation style was unprejudiced sparkling! The mix of cartoon with computer-generated animation was a luminous search for to peruse. The scenes in this movie had amazing dimension, color, style, and a totally mesmerizing quality. It definitely made it very easy to rep myself drawn into this futuristic world.

The myth is expansive too! Honorable character development and a sci-fi element that is at least partially believable (and certainly, if nothing else, attractive) . Space in the year 2077, the technology is slick, clever, and wintry – yet not so far fetched that you can’t imagine the possibilities suggested. Unplug and catch into the fantasy and you’ll have a spacious time. The movie has a bit of a Matrix quality in that (aside from its distinct political elements) there is the strong sense of an underlying (almost spiritual) theme driving the fable but it’s unprejudiced far enough removed from the surface anecdote that you can dig for messages if you want to or fair bask in the stir without getting into the philosophy of the film. I like movies that have multi-faceted elements like this. It made me want to look it again to try and design more out of it.

In short, the movie is broad! It’s more of a drama than out and out action (so it might strike some viewers as a miniature slow-paced in places), but the action is fun and the record is beneficial. The characters are such that you care about them and that draws you even further into the myth. There is also some chilly music in the film, well placed with the various scenes and fresh enough so that it doesn’t strike as typical. My accepted songs are “Target Practice” by Asian Dub Foundation, “Bird Flu” by M.I.A. and “The Virus” by Paul Oakenfold. Again, the artwork and C.G. effects are gorgeous and really fun to study.

I loved the movie and would eye it again (and will) because I’m ordering it today! Parents who are consuming about the say will be gratified to know that there are no sexual themes in this film. There is a light sub context of a esteem epic prove, but it’s not the main focus of the film. There is sci-fi action and violence but nothing bloody or grotesque. There is a exiguous bit of language, thus earning it its PG-13 rating.

If you like anime or honest first-rate sci-fi, both elements should please. I recommend it.

I agree with fair about everyone else who has reviewed this DVD, how can the people who edited this slice out the BEST performance of the concert which was Extreme’s medley of Queen songs. I thank my lucky stars I tranquil have it on tape from when MTV first aired the concert 10 years ago. It’s my current piece of the reveal and by far one of the coolest moments. The band, most especially Gary Cherone, payed tribute to Freddie and Queen in the best procedure I’ve ever seen. The medley of songs were performed with such excitment and the audience loved them. So did I :) This DVD impartial starts the concert with Joe Elliott doing Tie Your Mother Down, that’s like the middle of the indicate! There were several performances sever out mainly Metallica, Guns ‘N Roses, Def Leppard, and the above mentioned Rude. This DVD needs to be re-issued in it’s entirety. I did, however, like those Freddie segments included on the dvd that were shown to the audience during intermission. Those were really frigid. Grand concert but not shown to it’s fullest potential on this dvd and that’s a steady shame. QUEEN AND FREDDIE deserve more…and so do the fans :)

Like some of the other reviewers, I am lucky to have the VHS version of the concert. Bear it or not, the VHS version is worthy better than the DVD version….The DVD version has only half of the concert…..i savor the first half of the concert, but its not included on the dvd. The whole dvd would have been delightful if the ENTIRE concert was on it :-(

It took two Hollywood films (Hard Target and Broken Arrow) before John Woo was allowed to slice loose with his trademark style on Face/Off. The result was his most commercially and critically successful American film at that point in his career. However, for fans of his Hong Kong films, this one seemed like a highlight reel from his earlier work as Woo recycled many of his signature shots Birds flying in unimaginative motion? Check. Guy Leaping in the air while firing two guns simultaneously? Check. Unfortunately, Face/Off marks the apex of his Hollywood career. Woo has done nothing since that’s been as top-notch. So, to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, Paramount has revisited the film with a designate fresh special edition.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Face/Off! Click Here

Woo works hard to sell the film’s admittedly unusual gimmick by throwing all kinds of scientific mumbo jumbo at us and lingering on shots of spiffy looking technology. The swapping of identities also allows the filmmaker to request one of his favourite themes: how two people can expose similar characteristics but be on opposite sides of the law and on opposite sides of the true spectrum. It is nice to notice Woo finally given a decent-sized budget to play with and two big-time movie stars like Cage and Travolta to work with. Despite a few brave glimmers, like staging a chaotic gunfight around a child listening to “Under the Rainbow,” we unexcited derive a recycling of Woo’s stylistic trademarks. However, this can be somewhat forgiven as it was the first staunch exposure for many North Americans to his work on a mainstream level.

The first disc features an audio commentary by director John Woo and screenwriters Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. Woo says that he initially passed on the project because he didn’t deem that he could do a science fiction film, but after working with CGI on Broken Arrow, felt more comfortable with the plan. The writers say that Woo concentrated on the characters and their emotions in their conversations together.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Face/Off! Click Here

Also included is an additional commentary with Werb and Colleary that features a lot of repeated comments from the previous track. Werb and Colleary stress that they wanted to write an action film with a villain that was unprejudiced as exciting as the hero.

There are six deleted scenes and alternate ending with optional commentary by Woo, Werb and Colleary. There’s a nice, reflective moment where Archer spends the night in his monotonous son’s room before his surgery and also two action sequences that are extended.

The second disc has a well-made documentary entitled, “The Light and The Dark: Making Face/Off” that can be viewed in five separate featurettes or altogether. Cage and Travolta talk about how they approached their roles, mimicking each other. Cast and crew praise Woo and his signature style and how well he works with actors. The film’s clarify practical, visual effects and stunts are all examined. Finally, Woo sums up the film – for him, it’s all about family and how Archer achieves closure with his.

“John Woo: A Life in Pictures” is a 30-minute profile of the filmmaker, from his humble childhood, living bad in a dreadful neighbourhood to a successful Hollywood director. It also takes a brief watch at some of his key Hong Kong work but nothing too detailed for hardcore fans. This doc acts mainly as a primer for newcomers to his work.

Finally, a theatrical trailer.

We already know this is a mammoth action film with honorable performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will impartial comment on the features:

Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, location designs, special effects, weapons and the ‘mimic’ acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the current theatrical trailer.

The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in newly filmed interviews, both Travolta and Cage participate only by draw of vintage interviews filmed succor when the movie was actually being made. You would judge they would have been proud enough of this big film to approach serve to document it for posterity sake…

This DVD is probably worth the upgrade for fans, especially if you can manage to pick up a few bucks for your extinct copy.

If you are like most Americans, you have probably never seen the fresh, unadulterated “Godzilla” (Unique title “Gojira.” the name being a mix of the Japanese words for “gorilla” and “whale.”) More familiar with the campy, badly dubbed and edited version that graced TV screens in the 70s, we have seen Raymond Burr awkwardly inserted into the site, anti-American political sentiments removed, and a horde of mismatched dialogs and ridiculous translations. Well, we are in for a precise treat!

The Japanese “Godzilla” is a serious film, starring Kurosawa venerable Takashi Shimura (“Seven Samurai,” “Ikura”) . (In fact, two of Shimura’s films, “Godzilla” and “Seven Samurai” competed for the 1954 Japanese Academy Award for Best Represent.) Only nine years after the atomic bombs devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the threat of nuclear power was very grand in the minds of the average Japanese citizen. Contamination, mutation, radiation…this was far from science fiction. This is the fire from which sprang the King of Monsters.

In a now-familiar status, American nuclear testing has given rise to a 150-foot huge engine of destruction, breathing atomic fire and hell-bent on destroying Tokyo before taking on the world. Assembling the army, and all of the unique science Japan can muster, they battle the rampaging monster to the inevitable conclusion.

Standing along side the modern 1933 “King Kong,” “Godzilla” is a classic monster movie, as well as a ravishing film in its believe legal. A suspenseful horror-drama, the acting, filming and special effects are all far above other entries in the genre. The dark and white filming is weak superbly, with the fire-cast shadows making the monster all the more menacing.

What is mammoth about this place, is that not only do you accept a restored and fair version of the current classic, you collect an additional disk with the American edit complete with the stuffy professor Raymond Burr and the additional footage concept famous for American audiences. It is a rare chance to compare the two versions, and eye how politics in the US affected what audiences were allowed to notion in the 1950s.

I have been waiting a long time for the fresh “Godzilla” to win a DVD release, and it is substantial to spy it finally being treated with the respect it deserves.

Bottom line: If any of you grew up watching or watched recently: “Godzilla, King of the Monsters”, the chopped up “U.S.” version, grasp it out of your mind and forget about it. You are in for a cinematic masterpiece when this DVD releases. I had the honor of watching the unusual “Gojira” at a theater in my town. This is the film that started it all. When it was relased in the U.S., it was butchered, altered and changed into an average science fiction film with Raymond Burr fill-ins. He wasn’t even in the novel film. The unusual “Gojira” is a sci-fi/horror masterpiece. The film creates feelings of fright and sorrow. The “modern” version is a remarkable darker, immoral film. AWESOME! The film also focuses more on the suffering of the Japanese people during the atomic age. The film makes you feel their tension and suffering. There is one scene where Gojira is staring at a astronomical ben style clock. He is staring at it for no apparent reason. The scene makes you wonder what Gojira is thinking at the time. Then, for no reason, he tries to engage a bite out of it. That scene alone changes the feeling of the film to something more than a lumbering beast destroying everything. MUST Sight! MUST Acquire!
